It took three different law enforcement agencies several hours to track down Shane Tilley, 22, after his escape.
According to court records, in 2006, two days after taking 32 doses of an over-the-counter cough medicine, Shane Tilley killed his roommate Andy Lubben by stabbing him at least two dozen times. Police said they followed a trail of blood to Tilley's apartment, and found him naked, talking gibberish, with apparently self-inflicted knife wounds on his chest and neck. Tilley was found not guilty by reason of insanity.
"We convened a as many officers as we could between the Sheriff's Office, the Lincoln Police Dept. and the Nebraska State Patrol and we did a manhunt for several hours until mid afternoon," said Neb. State Patrol Lt. Ken Dahlke.
Lincoln Police, the Lancaster County Sheriffs Office, the State Patrol, along with a k-9 officers and a helicopter began searching for Tilley Wednesday morning.
"We've always had a great working relationship with all of the agencies around here and this is no different today," said Dahlke. "This just shows that we can work together and still get the job done."
Police said the job was abandoned at about 3:45 in the afternoon. Officers needed to respond to dozens of other emergency calls that had been delayed due to the manhunt.
"The longer you're on something like that, the chances of you finding the person are reduced," said Cpt. David Beggs with the Lincoln Police Dept. "They may have slipped through the perimeter, they may have been beyond the perimeter before we even got there. They chances of finding them becomes remote."
But at 5:45 they caught a break. An Omaha news crew spotted Tilley near the train tracks at 6th and Van Dorn Streets in Lincoln. They called police and Tilley was arrested after a minor altercation with police.
"We're relieved that he didn't have a hostage and there were no weapons and that he was apprehended peacefully," said Dahlke.
"It's always good because now we know he's not going to re-offend," said Beggs. "With some people you're worried there is going to be a re-offending - break into someones house, take someone hostage, hurt someone they're angry with - you just don't know. We're very happy he's been taken care of."
Police said Tilley was taken to the Regional Center, where he is under supervision. The Lancaster Co. Attorney will review the case and decide if any charges will be made against Tilley.

You Lincoln people are funny at best, sad at worst! This place is near worthless in accomplishing anything that they claim they do. Stop pretending and just give those state employees the year off with pay. No make that a whole working? Lifetime off with pay. Those of us in the private sector will work to pay the bills till you drive us all into not caring anymore.
you all complain about needing so much money to help support the LRC ok well why should us tax payers pay for that to. were already paying for a stupid arena, maybe those funds could have went to help you poor LRC staff stop complaining and face up to reality. you people are there to do your jobs and apparently you FAILED just admit it and if you want more money to help out with your facility then take it out of your own checks. us tax payers are paying for the cops and everyone else to be out looking for this LOOSER. go back to work and DO YOUR JOBS!!
Funny they would have you doing stories about crazy people...
Thanks Lee you are so right. If more people would get involved with even their neighborhoods it would help. Everyone sits on their hands instead of calling someone when they see a crime....the old line "Oh its none of my business is getting sickening to hear.
Thanks to Lee ...I agree with you. Who ever decided to let this man go outside with groups should have thought again. However I will say LRC has great staff.
You are talking about a mentally ill individual here and NO one knows what hell he probably was going through after he walked off the regional center grounds. If he was running from anyone don't you think he would have been farther from the regional center and hiding ...These people are sadly ill and dont think at all like we as "normal" do.
extensive drug use can alter the normal chemical structure of the brain permanently, I am not a doctor, but am trained in the area,
Katie, I'm sorry about the loss of your friend but again don't blame it on LRC employees. The decision to place this man in LRC and to allow him to go for on grounds walks was in the hands of the Judge.
The Lincoln Regional Center is a Psych Hospital and the building he is in is a highly restrictive Psych hospital!
LRC Employee, its not the communities fault for one of your "patients" escaping, something must've gone wrong. Yes your job is probably hard, but you can't blame the community for not putting money towards you guys it's in the governments control where the taxes go, NOT the people's. Shane Tilley should be in a physiactric ward or a insane asylum... He is very dangerous he killed a generous and amazing man who was like a Teddy Bear to many. For him taking that man out of friends and families life's and those who didn't know him but have heard so much of him, Shane should be locked away for life.
I was just checking other TV stations in the area and I found that Action 3 News (KMTV) Reporter Molli Graham found the suspect and shot video with her photographer's camera.
just to clear up a comment....Andy and Shane were not roomates, Andy lived at home and Shane had another roommate. They weren't even good friends but Andy was the type of guy who tried to be there for those he knew that were troubled,
Thank you LRC it is a tough job and most of the people complaining would never come out and work with us and put themselves in risk to make sure we do our best to keep this facility safe and secure maybe they just don't understand what we go through, like being violently attacked and sent to the hospital on a more frequent occurrence. And that therapist did their best to prevent that from happening and he wasn't a Doctor he was a Recreational Therapist who was a capable person to escort this individual. I know I speak for most of us direct care staff when we say thank you for support of our facility but if there are to be any changes this should be brought to the attention of our state government and push the concern, to keep places like LRC and NSP open and able to run each facility properly.
THANKS LRC and by the way everyone, it was the JUDGE's decision to give this man on grounds privilege's! Please know your fact's before blaming the hard working LRC employees! Also if it make's anyone feel any better there are much more dangerous people walking the streets right now!
I just love Lincoln Nebraska.
