Agriculture Literacy the Topic of Nebraska Bill

The Nebraska Legislature's Agriculture Committee is set to debate the creation of a panel to study whether schools are effectively teaching children about agriculture and where their food comes from.

Sen. Kate Sullivan of Cedar Rapids introduced a bill that would create an Agriculture Literacy Task Force to study whether agriculture plays an adequate role in school curriculum across the state.

A hearing on the measure is scheduled Tuesday.

Sullivan says officials need to examine what students are learning because more children are growing up with no connection to farming and ranching.

The state's Commissioner of Education, however, says his department is working on the issue and any additional study would be redundant.

Roger Breed says work on revising school curriculum has begun
and a report is due by October.
