Homer's Heroes: Dennis Burke Reports

Every summer thousands of kids across the country hit the dirt for baseball. In Lincoln, one league is making sure every kid has an opportunity to play.

Homer's Heroes is a baseball league dedicated to children with disabilities. It provides children with the opportunity to enjoy a sport they weren't always able to take part in.

Annette Powers has a daughter with Down Syndrome. She's thrilled watching her daughter have fun throwing the baseball around.

"This is the one place you can come to and everyone's a winner. And not just to play the game, to have fun," says Powers.

Homer's Heroes started in 1992, growing bigger every year. This year over a hundred kids played on eight different teams.

Denise Ray has a son with Autism. It's the first time he was able to participate in sports rather than just watch his brothers.

"It means the ability to do something that he wouldn't normally have the opportunity to do. We have lots of children of our own that do lots of sports. He likes to watch them but he's never had the opportunity to play. And this gives him the opportunity to play," says Ray.

Players on the local high school baseball teams help out, making sure every child feels like a winner.

"Everybody is a success out here. And they make it so that every kid is able to field the ball, hit the ball. It's a very positive experience," says Ray.
