Chadron Sirens Off Line for Upgrade

Warning sirens in Chadron in the Nebraska Panhandle are being taken out of service for the next week or so for an upgrade.

The city's four outdoor sirens used for fire and rescue calls are being refitted to meet new requirements by the Federal Communications Commission.

Chardon 911 director Tony Serbousek says the sirens are activated by a radio signal sent from the communications center, but the current system uses a frequency range that's being phased out by the FCC.

The upgrade should take 5 to 7 days.
