Volunteers are being sought to help count deer at the Homestead National Monument of America in southeast Nebraska.
Officials say volunteers don't need any experience, but they will need warm outdoor clothing and good walking shoes or boots. The survey takers will hike about three-quarters of a mile through the monument land, which sits about four miles west of Beatrice.
People who don't want to walk or can't will be stationed to count deer as they leave the monument. Some of the deer will be disturbed by the approaching survey takers and will seek safety elsewhere.
The survey is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. on March 9 and end by noon.
