During the first session of the 102nd Legislature, ten organizations held a rally outside the State Capitol about the proposed TransCanda oil pipeline.

About 100 people gathered on steps of the Capitol Tuesday.

As you can see, these people would like the pipeline stopped completely.

But since that's a federal decision these groups can't control, they'd like what they consider the next best thing.

Bold Nebraska Director Jane Kleeb says she wants to see state senators regulate certain aspects of the pipeline, especially protecting environmental areas.

Kleeb says, "We can't stop the permit process, that is up to the federal government, but what we can stop is a pipeline going through the Sandhills or going through the heart of the Ogallala Aquifor. We can also require better emergency response plans."

34th District Senator Annette Dubas tells 10/11, "I intend on introducing legislation that will involve the Public Service Commission, which will provide for some public hearings and permitting process at the state level. They're involved with natural gas pipelines, they have an understanding."

Dubas says she plans to introduce this legislation this week.

The Senator also says it's a possibile the legislature could also look at nebraska's emminent domain laws.
