EPA Penalizes Nebraska's Behlen Manufacturing

Behlen Manufacturing has agreed to pay a penalty of nearly $60,000 for several EPA violations at its plant in Columbus.

The Environmental Protection Agency says Behlen also agreed to spend a minimum of nearly $75,600 to install anti-pollution equipment.

The EPA and Behlen have been discussing the violations since they were noted during an EPA inspection in October 2009.

The EPA says Behlen will turn the wastes "into a useful product" and, by accepting the settlement, has certified that is complying with the appropriate EPA regulations.

Behlen CEO Phil Raimondo says he's disappointed the EPA decided to cite the company over this issue. He says Behlen cooperated with regulators and tries to continually improve its compliance with environmental rules.

Behlen makes steel buildings, agricultural equipment and other products.
