Elementary School Raises Money for Families Dealing With Medical Issues

Teachers, students, and faculty at a Grand Island elementary school are doing what they can to help raise money for three families dealing with major medical issues, and the small fundraisers add up in a big way.

At Knickerehm Elementary school students are learning skills to help them succeed in life, but perhaps one of the biggest lessons of the day is the one about helping others.

"The kids love to know they are helping each other and making a difference," said 5th Grade Teacher Hether Gosda.

"So when kids bring money for a hat day or a popcorn day then they know its going towards a family and they're not just bringing money for popcorn or a hat. It's for a good reason," said Kindergarten Teacher Amber Woitaszewski.

Rich Aguilar the Head Custodian knows that first hand, fundraising efforts are helping his grandson little Richard. He had an infection on his brain and went into the hospital on his 14th birthday.

"And his brain swelled up and they had to go in and drain that out and he was a pretty sick boy for a few days," said Rich Aguilar.

Little Richard is doing much better attending therapy and school half a day. Meanwhile, teachers say its all about building community and helping others.

"Thats what my job is about doing what we can to help each student," said Gosda.

The fundraising efforts are also helping a father who has cancer, and a pregnant mom who had a stroke.
If you'd like to help in the effort you can get in touch with the school.
