They weren't expecting her for another month.

"It was a surprise for us! We were kind of not prepared for having a baby at the beginning of the year."

But Guadalupe Fonseca says, her baby didn't want to wait.

"On February 2nd, I had a scheduled c-section but this baby decided to come sooner," said Fonseca.

Demaris Fonseca was the first baby to be born in 2013 at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings. Guadalupe and Juan Carlos Fonseca welcomed their newborn baby girl on New Year's Day... weighing in at only 4 pounds and 12 ounces. Guadalupe says she didn't know Demaris was the first baby born at the hospital in 2013 until the staff told them.

"We didn't know until later when they let us know. We didn't think about that. We were not expecting to have the baby on January 1st so we weren't thinking about that," said Fonseca.

Although they were caught off guard, the Fonsecas say they look forward to bringing home a new family member sooner than expected.

"It was a surprise for us but it's a blessing," said Fonseca.

And they will have a good birthday story to tell for many years to come.
