A high speed automobile chase that began around 10:30 p.m. on Friday night was followed by a manhunt, resulting in the arrest of the second suspect at the Minden Library at around noon on Saturday.
The events began with a Nebraska State Patrol officer attempting to pull over and issue a speeding ticket on I-80 to the driver of a Subaru Impreza. The driver, however, refused to stop.
NSP Sergeant Jeff Roby recounted what followed: "...A pursuit ensued. The vehicle exited the Interstate near the Kearney interchange, headed south on Highway 44, went down to Highway 6 through Minden, then back up on Highway 10."
During the high speed chase, authorities say that suspects Aleksandr Voznyuk and Petr Strizheus fired at least two shots, one of which hit the pursuing patrol cruiser.
The suspects finally drove their vehicle into a roadside ditch about half a mile north of the Fort Kearney Feedlot, and fled on foot.
The deck was stacked against them as the Nebraska State Patrol deployed dogs and a helicopter equipped with infrared vision.
Sergeant Jeff Roby: "Along with the Nebraska State Patrol Charlie SWAT team, one of the suspects was apprehended in the field around 2 o'clock this morning."
Suspect Petr Strizheus, however, was still on the run, and showed up this morning at Minden's Jensen Memorial Library. Police believe he may have been using their computer to contact associates when a librarian tipped off the police about the suspicious patron, resulting in his arrest.
