An insurance company that canceled the homeowner's policy of a Nebraska sheriff's deputy because of his K-9 unit dog says it's looking to change its practices regarding police dogs.

American Family Insurance Co. apologized Thursday to Douglas County Deputy Andy Woodward, who received a letter from the insurer earlier this month informing him his policy would end Dec. 19 because the K-9 dog was considered a liability.

A company spokesman had said Wednesday that American Family does not write policies for people who have trained guard or attack dogs at their homes. But Witmer said Thursday the company is looking into changing that guideline.

Woodward said Thursday he had not heard from American Family. Asked about the apology, he said he doesn't want it to happen to other officers.
