Lincoln Might Get the Boot

You know the routine, feed the meter or pay a fine. But soon you could get the boot.

When your car isn't parked where you left it there might be a moment of uncertainty. Did it get towed, or did someone steal it? The City of Lincoln wants to remove some of that uncertainty by implementing the parking boot. Anyone with five outstanding parking tickets, or $250 in fines might get the boot, but it's $100 cheaper than getting towed.

"You know there's a way to avoid this whole mess," said Dave Landis, The City of Lincoln's Urban Development Planner. "Pay your tickets."

Paying parking tickets is what the boot is designed to do. The city has a list of a couple hundred people who have hundreds in unpaid parking tickets. City Councilman Eugene Carroll watches the A&E show, Parking Wars, and he'd like to take a cue from the show.

"The top 10 or 25 people, we have their address," said Carroll. "Why can't we go search out those people and put a boot on their car?"

Landis says legally the city does have that authority.

"I think it actually would be wise to do it where we found offenders," said Landis. "So we don't assume the only place where you're at risk is downtown."

That might mean downtown parking meters aren't the only place you need to worry about. Legally the city could boot your car in your own driveway. If your car does get the boot you have 24 hours to pay the city to remove that boot. If you don't they will tow.
