The city of Lincoln has formally opened a new Amtrak station.

The new facility in the city's Haymarket District replaces an 89-year-old former Burlington Route station that trains will no longer be able to reach. The station will serve passengers of the California Zephyr train.

The station began serving passengers on Wednesday. Funding for the $1.3 million facility came from the city and the West Haymarket Joint Public Agency, which is responsible for developing the area.

The California Zephyr operates daily between Chicago and the San Francisco Bay. Lincoln is the second-busiest station in Nebraska, serving nearly 12,000 passengers last year.
