LPS Teacher Removed From Classroom After Assault Citation

A Lincoln Southwest High School teacher is facing an assault charge following an incident in his classroom.

Police said 44-year-old Gianluigi Catalano threw a 17-year-old student against a door, resulting in a bump on the student's head.

Officer Katie Flood said students in the Spanish teacher's class were being disruptive and disrespectful on the afternoon of Friday, January 20th. The report states Catalano grabbed the student by the front of his jacket, then threw him against the door.

"Several students witnessed the incident," Officer Flood said. "Interviews were conducted and on Wednesday, that teacher, Gianluigi Catalano, was cited and released for assault.

LPS administrators said Catalano will not be put back in the classroom.

"Anytime a teacher assaults a student, they won't be put back in that situation," said Dr. Nancy Briggs, LPS Human Resources.
