N.B.A. Says Nebraska's Banking Industry is Strong

Nebraska's banks say they escaped the bank crisis that hit the country. 1011's Catherine Crane found money is available to borrow, but for those who lost a job,and with that their credit, it may not be good enough for a loan.

You don't fix what isn't broken.

"We are doing fairly well here compared to what's going on around the rest of this nation," said Kendell Holthus, Executive Vice President of Cornerstone Bank in York.

That's the Nebraska Bankers Association's motto.

"We're not going to spend what we don't have," said Holthus. "We're not going to live beyond our means, and I think we've taken that philosophy and we've passed that on to our customers.

They say that’s why the Nebraska banking industry hasn't seen the massive closures that have affected the rest of the country, and that's saved them during the recession.

The Nebraska Bankers Association says day to day activities at the bank won't change, but it is a good time to look for a mortgage.

"Oh a fabulous time, if you have the income to support the ability to purchase a home," said Clark Lehr, President and CEO of First Nebraska Bank in Columbus. "Home prices right now in a lot of communities have never been better."
