Neb. Highway Closed When Radioactive Load Shifts

A mishap involving a flatbed truck carrying low-level radioactive waste has shut down a section of Nebraska Highway 2.

The truck was heading eastbound Saturday morning when the driver made a sudden stop, causing the truck's nearly 9-ton load of low-level radioactive waste to slide forward into the truck's cab.

Fire Battalion Chief Jeanne Pashalek says the driver was not injured when the load shifted, but the truck's sleeping cab was damaged.

Pashalek says the waste did not spill and does not pose a risk to the public, but the weight of the load requires heavy equipment to move.
