Fourth-grade students across Nebraska are being asked to put their artistic skills to work to raise awareness about severe weather.

State emergency management officials and the National Weather Service are sponsoring the severe weather awareness poster contest.

The posters can address any aspect of severe weather safety. Organizers say tornadoes, lightning and flooding are good topic choices.

Posters will be judged on originality, effort and accuracy.

The top prize is a $150 gift card. Second place wins a $100 gift card, and third place wins a $75 card.

The entry deadline is Feb. 22. Winners will be contacted in early March and be invited to the State Capitol on March 12 for the presentation of their awards.
