A bill intended to limit frivolous lawsuits filed by Nebraska prison inmates is set for a legislative hearing.
The measure by Omaha Sen. Scott Lautenbaugh would ban lawsuits from prisoners if they have filed three or more claims declared frivolous by a judge. The Legislature's Judiciary Committee is scheduled to hear testimony on the measure Friday.
The proposal resembles a U.S. law that applies to federal prisoners. Advocates say 16 other states, including Iowa, have enacted similar measures.
Lautenbaugh says the bill will save time and money for courts that must handle the frivolous inmate cases. Inmate lawsuits could proceed if a judge determines that the prisoner faces imminent danger.
