The average Nebraska homeowner would get $160 in property tax relief, under a bill introduced to rival Gov. Dave Heineman's tax cut proposals.

Sen. Heath Mello's Property Tax Relief Act is up for debate Wednesday in the Revenue Committee.

The Omaha senator says his measure represents the most significant middle-class tax relief package under consideration this year.

He says any tax cuts should involve property tax relief.

The governor has proposed a $327 million tax cut plan that includes the elimination of the inheritance tax and cuts to corporate and individual income taxes.

Heineman says his plan provides $274 million in relief for individuals and $53 million for businesses.

Mello's plan offers $76 million in property tax relief by allowing a homestead exemption on the first $8,000 of home value.
