The University of Nebraska Medical Center's Munroe-Meyer Institute is now offering epilepsy clinics to pediatric patients in rural Nebraska via telemedicine.
The clinics have been made possible by a $265,000 grant.
All of Nebraska's pediatric neurologists and epilepsy specialists practice in Omaha. That means parents of children with epilepsy who live in rural Nebraska sometimes wait between four to six months for an appointment, and some have to travel up to 250 miles.
Project ACCESS, the Nebraska Epilepsy Initiative, seeks to close that gap.
Now, rural patients can check in at a Kearney hospital or a telemedicine site approved by Medicaid closer to their hometown.
Patients are able to see and talk to a pediatric neurologist via webcam.
Future clinics are scheduled for Oct. 7, Nov. 18 and Dec. 9.
