Lincoln's MADD Is Disappointed with Mother's DUI Sentence

A southeast Nebraska woman has been given 15 days in jail and 18 months of probation for driving drunk with children in her vehicle.

Andrea Weber, of Fairbury, had pleaded guilty to several charges, including drunken driving, reckless driving and attempted assault on an officer.

Sara Draper of Lincoln's “Mother's Against Drunk Driving” is disappointed with the sentence.

"We always encourage a strong sentence,” Draper said, “especially in a case like this.”

According to police reports Beatrice police were notified of a possible drunk driver on Oct. 31.

The officer attempted to pull the driver over, but she led police on a slow chase down the wrong way of a one-way street.

Once she stopped, officers discovered Weber had two children, ages 3 and 4, in the car.

"These children didn't have a choice,” said Draper. “The person that was supposed to be protecting them was the one that put them in danger.”

Reports said Weber admitted to drinking, refused to perform a sobriety and breathalyzer test, and assaulted an officer.

Weber was not charged with child endangerment, but was found guilty of transporting minors while intoxicated.

Gage County Attorney Roger Harris couldn't comment on the length of sentencing, but said there are provisions in her probation to ensure the children’s safety.

"Our primary directive is to get the children back in the home with the appropriate safeguards," said Harris.
