An Omaha metal refinery will pay $500,000 in a settlement with the federal Environmental Protection Agency and the state of Nebraska to help cover more than $275 million in lead contamination cleanup costs in eastern Omaha.

The settlement will see Aaron Ferer & Sons Co. pay $480,000 to the EPA and $20,000 to the state.

The settlement was filed Monday in Nebraska's federal court in conjunction with a lawsuit that could have sought millions from the company, located on the banks of the Missouri River in northeastern Omaha.

The U.S. Justice Department says the settlement is the final and smallest at the Omaha superfund cleanup site.

Last year, Omaha railroad Union Pacific agreed to a $25 million settlement, while mining company Asarco agreed to a $200 million settlement.
