Omaha police say an officer was involved in a shooting in a west city neighborhood.

Officer Michael Pecha says the shooting happened just after noon Wednesday on 124th Street north of West Dodge Road -- one of the city's busiest thoroughfares.

One man was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Authorities say officers were first sent to a home around noon to check on a man reportedly armed with a knife and threatening suicide. KETV says police confronted the man behind another home in the area.

Police say at least one officer fired, hitting the man at least once.

Pecha tells The Associated Press that he has no other details of the shooting and that the man shot has not been identified.
