The city of Omaha has opened an emergency shelter in the wake of the season's first major snow storm that left thousands of people in Nebraska's largest city without power.
City officials and the American Red Cross set up a shelter Thursday night at Columbus Park Community Center in eastern Omaha.
Red Cross staffers provided hot meals and minor medical care for those using the shelter. Places to sleep were also provided.
Those using the shelter have also been encouraged to bring their pets. The Nebraska Humane Society is caring for those pets until residents can return to their homes.
