State Lawmakers Tackle Truancy

State lawmakers look to tackle truancy and how excessive absentees are handled.

If a child misses 20 days at school, the county attorney is notified by school officials.

The attorney decides if any action needs to take place.

Critics said Monday a law to fix a flaw, has become a flaw.

Supporters say the declining numbers, speak for themselves.

Commissioner Roger Reed of the Nebraska Department of Education said, "It is clear that the attention of school authorities, parents, and county attorneys on school attendees is making a difference."

Though the stats have fallen, parents say their children are caught in the legal system.

Three bills look to change that.

Senator Ashford wants the county attorney to work with the school and a parent.

Senator Tony Fulton's bill would require a written notice be given to parents and a meeting set up between the two.

He also proposes a change in the number of absences allowed.

Senator Abbie Cornett says a child should be excused, if there's a documented illness or for a parent's military deployment.
