An Omaha family of six is safe after escaping a fire that destroyed their trailer home, but three pets died in the blaze.

A child playing with a lighter may have started the blaze on Sunday.

Leslie West, her husband and four children escaped the fire after the home's smoke alarms went off. West says she saw black smoke coming from one of the home's bedrooms. She says she tried to use a fire extinguisher to put out the flames, to no avail. She and her family moved into the home in September.

Three pet birds died in the fire.
