Police have made an arrest in the shooting of a mother and her child at the Indian Hills Village Apartment complex in Council Bluffs.
Ronald Lee Farr Jr. was arrested at a house in Harlan, Iowa. He is facing three counts of attempted murder, two counts of willful injury causing serious injury, and one count of going armed with intent.
Council Bluffs Police were first called out to the apartment complex near McPherson Avenue and Arbor Crest Lane just before 6 a.m. There, investigators said they found 22-year-old Heather Wilson, who was suffering from multiple gun shot wounds. Her 19-month-old son, Tyson Underwood, was struck in the arm.
“I heard six or more gunshots and after that, I heard a woman got shot and she was screaming for help," said Neighbor Emmalee Adams.
Police said Wilson and Tyson were shot in the parking lot while Wilson was putting Tyson into the car. Her other child was already inside. Police believe Farr unloaded at least 11 gunshots from a close proximity. Fifteen shell and bullet fragment casings were found at the scene.
Wilson and her child were taken to Alegent Creighton University Medical Center where Wilson underwent surgery. Her injuries were described as critical; however, investigators said both she and her son are expected to make a full recovery.
Police are now investigating the motive. Sgt. Dave Dawson said, “I can’t say what his thoughts were. I suppose he took a gun there with evidently some indication that he was going to do something with that gun.”
Police said Farr is an acquaintance of Wilson and that he is friends with her boyfriend.
