Breast Cancer Screening And Early Detection

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Screening and early detection is critical to a woman's survival.

Mammograms find breast cancer more often than any other detection device. They're recommended yearly for most women over the age of 40.

Cindy Rampee went in for her regular screening nearly ten years ago and learned that she had breast cancer.

"They found some little spots. I had a stereotactic biopsy, a partial mastectomy after that, followed by radiation. That is all because it was caught very, very early," said Rampee.

Cindy had a mild form of cancer and it has not returned.

Dr. Doug Winjum is a diagnostic radiologist who specializes in women's intervention at Bryan Health. He says mammograms are effective and crucial for women in their 40's.

"From a cost effective way, it is a good way of screening. If anything is abnormal or looks different from the remainder of the breast tissue, we can move forward with other diagnosis," said Dr. Winjum.

It is recommended that most women in their 20's and 30's do self breast exams regularly. The American Cancer Society also says women should also have checks by health care professionals every few years.

"It is important because there are a fair amount of breast cancers that are detected by the patient themselves," Dr. Winjum.

Early detection means the cancer is caught before it spreads and, therefore, easier to treat.

Rampee feels better that she is being screened and taking charge of her health.

"Considering the fact that I'm aware that I've had it before and I know how to deal with it and how to prevent it. It is something that, for me, is just a way of life. Having the chance to be reassured with a non-invasive test that doesn't hurt, isn't a pain to do. Wow, it is just great.," said Rampee.

Screenings are made available by health care professionals to women for free at the People's Health Center in Lincoln every third Tuesday of the month.
