Treating yourself for a night out on the town while sticking to a diet can be a challenge. But if you stick to simple rules, eating heart healthy doesn't have to be bland.

Madonna Proactive Dietician Katie Taylor tells the American Heart Association's Go Red challengers that everything is good in moderation. But there are a few red flags on a menu.
Taylor says you should watch out for creamy sauces, gravies and salad dressings.

"Those sauces and gravies they can pack quite a few calories. A cream based dressing will be higher in fat," said Taylor.

She says vinegrettes are healthier options for salads.

She also suggests looking at how food is prepared.
Heart healthy cooking methods include steamed, broiled, grilled or sauteed.

Cardiovascular Disease is the number one killer of all Americans.
The American Heart Association says someone dies of the disease every 38 seconds.
Heart Disease also kills more women than all forms of cancer combined.
And congenital heart defects are the most common cause of infant death from birth defects.

Heart Disease strikes 1 in 3 women every year. The American Heart Association's Go Red Challenge is a 12 week program designed to makeover a participant's overall heart health to lesson the risk of becoming part of a growing statistic. Four women were selected for this year's challenge through a casting call in August at Lincoln's Gateway Mall. Since then, they've worked closely with the Nebraska Heart Institute and fitness trainers and wellness coaches at Madonna Proactive to help get them on the right track.
