Registration is open for the 2013 LiveWell Challenge Series, the Nebraska Sports Council's platform for providing motivation and information to those seeking healthier lifestyles.

Challenge participants in 2013 will be competing for more than 5,000 prizes, including a dozen weekend getaways to Kansas City, Chicago, Denver and several Nebraska State Parks. Those interested can find information or register at

The Series begins with the worksite-friendly Team Challenge from Jan. 14 - April 8. The six-week Family Challenge, which helps busy families get "wellness-organized", begins June 3, and the Fall Challenge Oct. 7 - Nov. 18, encourages a healthy calorie-burn/calorie-intake balance going into the holidays.

Over the past 11 years, some 70,000 participants in the Sports Council's team wellness challenges have averaged nearly 4.5 lbs lost and nearly 30 minutes of daily physical activity. In 2012, 7,500 participants in the team competition lost an average of 4.89 pounds, with 70% maintaining their weight loss and/or activity level six months after the program ended. The debut of the LiveWell Family Challenge attracted 438 families, with more than 50% meeting the prize drawing benchmark of 300 points per week.

To help celebrate the LiveWell Team Challenge launch and to encourage Nebraskans to exercise and eat healthy in 2013, Governor Dave Heineman and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Joann Shaefer will lead the annual Governor & Workers Walk at the State Capitol at noon on Jan. 3.

Membership cost is $30, and all members of the LiveWell Challenge Series receive a micro-fiber training shirt, an annual subscription to a healthy-lifestyle magazine, motivational tips and success stories, year-long access to the tracking dashboard, discounts on entry in other NSC events and a host of other incentives from Nebraska Sports Council partners. A $5-off entry code is also available through employer-based teams in Nebraska.

Special administrative functions, including custom employee pricing, company-wide messaging, best-practices sharing and a host of statistical reports are available to companies and organizations. Those interested in establishing a company dashboard can email to request an administrator form and/or webinar schedule.
