After an embarrassing post-vacation weight gain last week, I really worked hard to turn the numbers around on the scale at this week's Go Red Challenge weigh in. I worked out almost every day and really paid attention to what I was eating. And guess what - it paid off! I'm down 6 pounds. I'm sure most of it was just my body getting back to normal after such a big binge, but non-the-less it's encouraging and sets me on the path to meeting my goal of losing 25 pounds by the end of the program.
We had a great class last night with our trainer. She was talking about all the benefits of exercise beyond losing weight. The most surprising thing I learned was working out can be as effective at treating depression as medication. That's not to say get off your meds and jump on a treadmill. But if you struggle with depression, adding exercise into your routine can help you feel better, both mentally and physically. I know when I've hard a rough day, exercising always makes me feel better. It stops me from obsessing about my problems and allows me to move on in my mind and find some peace.
I'm headed to zumba tonight with Lindsey, a fellow challenger. She's never tried it before and promises to be a "spaz" but I think we'll have fun. I love zumba, and it's a great total body cardio workout. Plus, a little booty shaking never hurt anyone :)
If you're challenging yourself to make positive life changes, stick with it! A little effort goes a long way, and small changes now can mean big results later. You really can be a better you in 12 weeks!
