Dakota County Provides Interpreters for Voters

Dakota County in northeast Nebraska is providing interpreters to help Somali and Spanish-speaking voters.

Dakota County Clerk Ted Piepho says that election officials have two Somali-speaking interpreters and multiple Spanish speakers stationed at the polls for Tuesday's election.

Piepho says the county didn't use Somalian interpreters during the 2008 elections, but decided to add them this year after noticing an increase in the number of Somali speakers registering to vote.

Piepho didn't know how many Somalians have registered to vote, but he decided have interpreters on hand at two precincts in South Sioux City where the vast majority were voting to provide help. He says those interpreters can be sent to other polling sites as needed.
