GOP Voices for Kerrey Show Deep Split in Party

The race for Nebraska's U.S. Senate seat has turned into a surprising debate among Republicans -- moderate party elder statesmen against modern conservatives.

Democratic candidate Bob Kerrey has gotten the endorsements of several prominent Republicans, including former Sens. Warren Rudman of New Hampshire, Alan Simpson of Wyoming and Chuck Hagel of Nebraska. They have praised him as someone who will work across party lines to solve the nation's problems.

Conservative Republican candidate Deb Fischer scrambled this week to get her own testimonials, including one from Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

The exchange reflects the deep ideological split in the GOP. Polls indicate the Senate race is close as Election Day approaches.
