Governor Vetoes Prenatal Care Bill

Governor Dave Heineman has delivered on his promise to veto a bill that would restore state-funded prenatal care benefits to illegal immigrants and other low-income women.

Heineman rejected the measure Friday, setting up a showdown between lawmakers on their final day of the session next week.

The Republican governor repeated his argument that the bill was unfair to legal, tax-paying residents. He also argued it could lead to state funding of Planned Parenthood or other doctors, hospitals and clinics that perform abortions.

Bill supporters and medical experts say the expense of birth complications and developmental problems in children more than offsets the cost of prenatal care. And the executive director of Nebraska Right to Life says the Planned Parenthood argument is an
11th hour attempt to scuttle the bill.
