Kerrey Accepts Debate Invitation; Fischer Defers

It doesn't look like Nebraskans will see a debate between U.S. Senate candidates Deb Fischer and Bob Kerrey early next month.

Kerrey, the Democrat, had accepted an invitation by the American Legion Cornhusker Boys State and Girls State to debate on June 5 in Lincoln.

But the campaign for Republican Fischer said she has a conflict.

Fischer's campaign manager, Aaron Trost, says the campaign wasn't given enough time to plan for the debate, but says she is looking forward to debating Kerrey later as the November election nears.

Kerrey says debating in conjunction with Boys and Girls State would send "just the right message." Kerrey says that's because the hot issues of entitlement reform and America's worldwide ranking in education have a direct impact on children.
