Gov. Heineman Opposed to Prenatal Care Bill

The governor spoke out Wednesday against members of his own party.

He says he's disappointed legislators are supporting two controversial bills.

One would provide prenatal care to illegal immigrants.

The other would raise the state sales tax by half a cent.

Heineman says spending tax payer money on illegal immigrants goes against the core values of the state.

He says that money could be much better spent on education.

But proponents of the bill say the state already spends money on the children of illegal immigrants and this bill will actually save the state money by ensuring more babies are born healthy.

Heineman says this is not a healthcare issue, but rather an illegal immigration issue.

But Speaker of the Unicameral Mike Flood disagrees.

Flood says it's a pro-life issue because an unborn baby does not have an immigration status.

The bill will cover all low-income women, not just illegal immigrants, and Flood says it will save the state money by preventing complications.

The speaker says he appreciates the governor's position on the issue.

Heineman has threatened to veto the bill if it reaches his desk but Flood says they have a lot of work to do before it gets to that point.

The governor is also concerned about the proposed sales tax increase Flood is supporting.

The governor says it will make the state less competitive for jobs.

He also says the increase is a step backwards that would hurt the working men and women in the state.
