Nebraska state Sen. John Wightman has been hospitalized after suffering a stroke at his home in Lexington.

According to a staffer in Wightman's Lincoln office, Jessica Shelburn, Wightman's family says the 73-year-old suffered a moderate stroke on Sunday afternoon.

He was taken to a Lincoln hospital for treatment and evaluation.

Shelburn says she has no information about when Wightman might return home or resume his duties.

Wightman, a Lexington attorney, heads the Legislature's Executive Board of the Legislative Council and holds a seat on the Appropriations Committee. He is not up for election this November.

He has had three knee replacements in his left leg since 2009 and missed part of the 2011 legislative session for treatment of an infection.
