Nebraska Secretary of State John Gale is urging lawmakers to pass a bill that would help his office reject fake liens filed vindictively against lawyers, bankers and others.

Gale says the filings have become more common in recent years.

He says his office isn't allowed to reject lien papers in most cases, and abusers have realized that they can use the system to damage people's credit and force them into court to have the lien removed.

Gale says 16 states have laws in place to address fake filings.

The Nebraska bill is sponsored by Sen. Burke Harr of Omaha, and modeled after legislation that was recently passed in Illinois.
