Nebraska Voters Enshrine Hunting in Constitution

Nebraska voters have decided to create a constitutional right to hunt and fish in the state.

Sen. Pete Pirsch of Omaha sponsored the hunting measure that was approved by voters Tuesday.

Pirsch says he was motivated by concerns over animal rights groups that had challenged hunting rights elsewhere.

He noted a ban on dove hunting approved by Michigan voters in 2006, a five-year ban on bear hunting in New Jersey that ended in 2010 and talk of banning boar hunts in New York.

By approving the measure, Nebraska joined 13 other states that have already enshrined the right to hunt in their state constitution.

Those who opposed the measure questioned whether it was needed because hunting and fishing don't appear to be threatened in Nebraska.
