An Omaha political consultant will run as a Democrat for secretary of state, the first Democrat to announce candidacy for a statewide office in the 2010 election.

Kris Pierce will travel around the state on Monday -- stopping in Grand Island, Lincoln and Omaha -- to declare his candidacy.

Pierce is the former executive director of the Douglas County Democratic Party.

Republican John Gale is the current Nebraska secretary of state. He has held the seat since he was first appointed by then-Gov. Mike Johanns in 2002. Gale has announced that he will seek re-election.

The secretary of state's office oversees elections, state records, business registry services and occupational licensing, among other duties.
