Vic Covalt has been re-elected as chairman of the Nebraska Democratic Party.

The 57-year-old Covalt, a Lincoln attorney, was re-elected during the party's state convention Saturday in Columbus.

Covalt was lauded two years ago for helping orchestrate February presidential caucuses that drew Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama to the state. Obama later siphoned a rare electoral vote from Nebraska.

Less than two years later, Covalt and the party have struggled to get a candidate at the top of the November ballot. Scottsbluff trial lawyer Mike Meister was nominated as the Democratic candidate for governor during Saturday's state convention. That came after Omaha investment banker Mark Lakers withdrew from the race earlier this month amid questions about is campaign finance reports.
