Thanks, but no thanks. That's the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's response to being nominated as a possible venue for the 2018 or 2022 World Cup.

Thanks, but no thanks.

That's the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's response to being nominated as a possible venue for the 2018 or 2022 World Cup.

U.S. Soccer announced this week that Memorial Stadium is among 70 venues under consideration for a bid the national governing body for soccer is preparing for FIFA, the world governing body.

UNL spokeswoman Kelly Bartling said Friday that Chancellor Harvey Perlman wrote to U.S. Soccer to say it would not be feasible for the university to host the event.

Bartling said there are too many logistical problems. Among them: the university doesn't want to change the stadium's artificial FieldTurf to natural grass, even temporarily.

I would agree on the revenue but think of the cost! This is world we are talking about. The major cities of the world don't even come close to breaking even on the Olympics. Have you seen what happens at these world cup games? We couldn't even come close to facilitating the security. I am not much on Harvey myself but I will agree with him on this one.

Bad choice, alot of people would have attended, huge revenue. Perlman does need to go, he is not thinking of Nebraska!

Think of the revenue this could have brought in...Pretty ironic that your other story posted today is that property taxes are PROBABLY on the rise...

Yet ANOTHER reason that Perlman needs to go!

I don't see why everybody is getting so worked up about this. There is no way this would have happened anyway. Lincoln does not have the hotels, transportaion systems, restaurants, etc... to host an event like this. The only reason we were mentioned is because we happen to have a large stadium. Other than that, Lincoln doesn't compare to places like Denver or Chicago when it comes to viability. This is the world we're talking about; there are many countries that will have more fans than the entire population of Nebraska.

Harvy, your an idiot!

I understand that hosting such a massive event such as the FIFA World Cup would be a logistical challenge, but this wouldn't be something that would need to be arranged next week. Certainly in 9 or 13 years some sort of plan could have been worked out. To simply reject, out of hand, the possibility of significantly increasing city and state revenue and placing the city in a position to demonstrate to the world the economic opportunities that we can offer seems foolish. This city, and this state, needs to grow and develop in order to insure it's continued economic vitality. Closing the door on future opportunities because we don't think they're feasible today is not embracing the kind of forward thinking that UNL is supposedly promoting as an important research university.

Typical, at the rate our leaders here in Lincoln are going we will not have anything left in lincoln. None of the small businesses really need more income any way... right? Chance like this come along once in a lifetime and as usual someone throws it away. Its no wonder we can't keep any college graduates here in town. Pretty soon we will have nothing but Walmarts in Lincoln, and everyone knows we already have 3 too many of those. Thanks for the big kick in the... Time for a new Chancellor and a little kissing up.

I too am shocked by this. I doubt we would have been selected but it would have been wonderful for the city and state!

We only owe ourselves this loss as were the ones who vote this older "can't see past the end of my nose" generation to make these decisions. Your right... the revenue would be tremendous not to mention make Nebraska a little more than a town full of bars and car washes... These people who run the University really need to retire and let a younger generation take over.

I would bet anything that the World Cup would payto have the field redone afterwards. Why would you not even consider such a wonderful opportunity to bring in HUGE amounts of revenue?????

Why would you not be interested?!? Not just Lincoln but the whole state would have benefit from this. I could not fathom the amount of money that would have brought in.....wow just wow...

Unbelievable - the biggest sporting event in the entire world - yes much bigger than husker football, and it would be too much work to host? I would think that in 10 years (if selected), Lincoln and the university could of come up with a viable plan. Get a new Chancellor with some vision. Harvey has outlived his position, there needs to be some new blood. Yes, it was extremely unlikely that Lincoln would of been selected, but had it been, it would of put Lincoln on the map (believe me, outside of the midwest, Lincoln is not on the map) and brought some much needed money into the city and state.

Hello, just continue to push away any type of revenue you can. What is wrong with the people in this state. When will the people here realize there is more to life then Husker football!!!!
