Malls Are Great For Your Health

The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day, like walking, to boost physical and heart health.

It can be tough to get out and exercise in the cold but there are ways you can do it without freezing.

Mall walkers have the right idea. They get a workout without having to worry about slipping on ice or walking through slush.

One lap around Westfield Gateway Mall is 7/10 of a mile.

The majority of the walkers are seniors and they don't mess around.
Many of them walk up to 4 miles before they leave for the day.

"90% of it is attitude. You can't think negative. You got to think positive," said Jack Kirkland.

The 82-year-old walks about 1.4 miles a day, 3 days a week.

"Life is too short to think negative. So we got to keep going," he said.

There is an entire health and wellness program surrounding the mall walkers. Westfield Gateway Mall in Lincoln has partnered with the Nebraska Heart Institute.

The program features weekly blood pressure checks and monthly seminars with doctors. Those seminars are held the second Thursday of each month.

Topics include managing cholesterol, women and heart disease, surgical options, men's health and more.

The mall opens for walkers at 7a.m. Monday through Saturday and at 9a.m. on Sundays.

Mall walking is a great idea. I would like to take it up. I wonder--are there heart-healthy options for snacking at the mall, after one finishes his or her walk?
