For the Kearney Bearcats, 2012 is all about improving following a 7 and 3 year that featured a second consecutive first round playoff exit.
"We want to finish out on top, so that doesn't just mean winning a state championship, it means looking back and knowing you gave it your all," said senior lineman Jackson Gannon.
A loss to Grand Island for the first time in a decade proved to be a low point in 2011 as well.
"That's a non issue for our team," said head coach Brandon Cool. "We're trying to do everything we can to better our program and prepare ourselves for week one against Pius."
Cool's players have not forgotten that loss one year ago, and are prepared to have some fun with the storied rivalry.
Asked what he was looking forward to most in his senior season, running back Caleb Lundgren said, "making the playoffs and beating GI of course."
It's not only a victory they're after, but recapturing an acronym they have created.
"WOGI [pronounced, Woah-Gee]. We Own GI," said Lundgren. "We're ready to start the trend again and get the win streak going."
"Always the team goal is to beat GI, and we want to restore WOGI," added Gannon.
