Michael Hadden led Scottsbluff with a team-high 19 points to lead the Bearcats to a 64-61 state championship win over South Sioux City Saturday afternoon at the Devaney Sports Center. Eric Moreno added 14 points, including connecting on 4 three point field-goals in the game. Zach Clemens chipped in 12 points in the win.
The win was a historic one for the Bearcats as its the first state championship for Scottsbluff in 47 years since Dwight D. Eisenhower was in The White House.
Mike Gesell was held in check the entire game. Gesell didn’t record his first points of the game until the 2nd quarter and then he only registered 4 points in the third quarter. Gesell was still effective though as he scored 30 points in the game, with a majority of that coming in the final quarter. He hit a three-pointer as time expired but it wasn’t enough to lift the Cardinals. Austin Groth finished with 16 points and Nate Rogers added 10 in the loss.
South Sioux City finishes the season at 17-7.
