LINCOLN -- Columbus junior Brett Beal shot a final-round 73 to win the Class A state golf championships by two shots at Holmes Lake Golf Course Wednesday afternoon.
Beal made three birdies on the front nine, and two on the back to finish 1-over-par for the day, and 3-over-par for the championship.
The state title is the first meet Beal has won at any level.
"It feels pretty good having everyone here--my team, my coach, my family," Beal said. "It's been great support. It helped a lot. I said today going in, I wouldn't look at any scores at the turn, just play my game, and it was good enough."
Millard North's Karl Kreiser seemed to have a firm grasp on the tournament when he followed his first round 71 with a 2-under-par 34 on the front nine.
However, the wheels fell off for Kreiser on the back nine.
He recorded three straight bogeys, and his double-bogey on the 18th hole meant a 6-over-par 78 on the day, and a finish in a group of four players two shots back tied for second.
Millard North did manage to win the Class A team title by four shots over Grand Island. Defending champion Lincoln Southwest finished third.
