The Lincoln North Star boys basketball team enters the new year with a new title — champions. North Star won the Heartland Athletic Conference tournament with three straight victories over Lincoln Northeast, Lincoln High to reach the championship game against Grand Island, which resulted in a 67-55 win for North Star giving the team its first championship in school history.
"Early in the season, we didn't set goals. We waited until the holiday break. After we came back from the moratorium, the first thing we did was go in the classroom and establish goals. The first goal they set was to win the holiday tournament. I'll give the kids credit, they did it," head coach Tony Quattrocchi said.
Senior forward Kiefer Musiel scored a game-high 22 points in the championship game. Musiel’s leadership and the play-making abilities of Noah Housh made the difference for the Navigators and they may just be the team to beat in the capital city, hitting the homeward stretch in the season.
"We know how good we can see. We haven't showed it until this tournament. We're just going to get better from here. Its a great confidence-booster." "We gotta keep getting better. We're not where we need to be at the end of the season, but I'm pleased with how this tournament turned out. We want to carry this momentum for the rest of the season."
Lincoln North Star (7-3) takes on intercity rival, Lincoln Southeast next Tuesday.
