Lincoln Mayor Chris Beutler is welcoming basketball fans to Lincoln for the State High School Basketball Tournaments the next two weekends. The girls tournament is March 1 through 3, and the boys tournament is March 8 through 10.
Paid attendance at the tournaments last year was 51,405 for the girls tourney and 93,701 for the boys. The UNL Bureau of Business Research has estimated that the two tournaments have an average economic impact of about $5.3 million a year.
“These kinds of events are very important for our entire community, and the future of events in our City has never looked better,” Mayor Beutler said. “In addition to the new Pinnacle Bank Arena opening in 2013, we are seeing new hotels, shops, parking options and restaurants opening up and being built. Lincoln is a great city to visit, and it’s getting even better.”
To help fans with traffic and parking, the City of Lincoln is offering $3 all-day event parking for the tournaments. The special rate is available Thursdays and Fridays at these facilities:
• Haymarket Garage, 848 “Q” Street
• Market Place Garage, 925 “Q” Street
• Que Place Garage, 1111 “Q” Street
Pershing Center and the Convention and Visitors Bureau also are offering a free shuttle bus to and from Pershing. The shuttle will operate every 10 minutes and will load and unload passengers on the east/9th Street side of the Haymarket Garage only.
First Hour Free parking applies in the City’s other facilities marked with “Park and Go” signage:
• Carriage Park Garage, 1128 “L” Street
• Center Park Garage, 1120 “N” Street
• Cornhusker Square Garage, 1220 “L” Street
• Iron Horse lot, 7th and “Q” streets
• University Square Garage, 101 N. 14th Street
• Lumberworks Lot, 7th and “O” streets
Fans are urged to avoid parking in private lots east of Pershing. Drivers should look for notices in private lots to avoid the expense and inconvenience of having a vehicle towed.
After 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, $5 event parking also will be available near Pershing Center in the State Parking Garage, 1501 “M” St., and the Federal Parking Garage, 100 S. Centennial Mall.
No overnight parking is allowed in these facilities.
