The Lincoln Pius X girls soccer team is doing something extraordinary this season to advance the safety in playing soccer — wearing head gear.
Last season, the Thunderbolts saw a couple of girls miss time due to concussions. With this in mind, the seniors came together and decided as a team they would wear headgear this season.
According to a study done in 2010, over 140,000 athletes are diagnosed with concussions each year, and for girls, soccer is the most prevalent sport where head trauma occurs.
Lincoln Pius X may be the first team to make head gear an essential element of soccer, but they hope they aren't the last.
