Redshirt freshman guard Toney McCray was named the Big 12 Conference Rookie of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. McCray was honored along with Oklahoma’s Blake Griffin, who won his sixth Big 12 Player-of-the-Week award.
It was the second time this season McCray earned the honor, as he also was selected as the rookie of the week for the opening week of the season when he posted 17 points with eight rebounds against San Jose State. The Missouri City, Texas, native became just the third Husker to earn the accolade more than once in his rookie season (also Kimani Ffriend and Joe McCray).
McCray helped the Huskers secure their seventh and eighth league wins last week, assuring the team its first .500 finish in Big 12 play since 1998-99. He averaged 11.0 points and 3.0 rebounds in the victories over Iowa State and Baylor. On Saturday, he poured in a career-best 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting while adding four rebounds, two blocks, two steals and an assist in the 66-62 road victory over Baylor. He was 9-of-14 from the floor on the week.
McCray will next try to help the Huskers as they open the Big 12 Championship with a rematch against Baylor on Wednesday, March 11, at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City. The Huskers and Bears will tip off at 11:30 a.m. in a game seen in select markets around the country on the Big 12 Network (Channel 8, KLKN, Lincoln; Channel 11, KXVO, Omaha).
